Man critically injured in Liverpool city centre attack

A 30-year-old man has been left in a critical condition after he was attacked with a "sharp object" by a gang in Liverpool city centre.

Police believe the man was assaulted by the group of men in St Peter's Square, near Seel Street, at about 04:00 BST.

The man went to Royal Liverpool University Hospital for treatment and is undergoing surgery.

Police have cordoned off the area for forensic examination and officers are reviewing CCTV footage.

Det Insp Andy Ephgrave said: "This was an extremely serious assault which has left a man in a critical condition."
