Motorist killed, six others injured, in one of two M53 crashes

A man was killed in a crash involving a lorry and eight other vehicles on a Merseyside motorway.

The victim, aged in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which happened on the M53 near Woodchurch, Wirral, at about 10:30 BST.

A female passenger in the Citroen car, also in her 40s, was taken to hospital.

The 60-year-old lorry driver, from Chester, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Four other people suffered minor injuries and one man suffered a serious chest injury. He was taken to Aintree hospital in Liverpool for surgery.

The accident was the second crash to happen on the road within an hour.

Four cars and two vans collided near Junction 4 at about 09:20 BST.

There were no immediate details of any injuries.
