The family of a "Good Samaritan" who died after being assaulted say she has been "taken away from us too early".

Police said Alison Wilson was attacked when she and her partner intervened in a disturbance between a man and a woman with a baby on 7 March in Widnes.

Ms Wilson, a 36-year-old mother-of-two, died on Friday in hospital.

Stephen Duggan, 27, of no fixed address, is charged with two counts of wounding with intent and two counts of assault.

Officers said her Ms Wilson's 43-year-old partner received cuts and bruising in the incident, which took place on Frank Street at about 23:20 GMT.

In a statement, her family said: "Alison was a beautiful, caring, loving, mother, daughter, partner, sister, sister-in-law and auntie.

"She was taken away from us too early for trying to help another person in distress."
