A 77-year-old woman has died after being hit by a lamppost that was damaged following a car crash.

The pedestrian was struck by a lamppost when it was damaged in a crash between two cars in The Strand in Liverpool city centre at about 14:50 GMT.

She suffered a head injury and died in hospital. Another pedestrian, a woman aged 51, was left with minor injuries.

A 36-year-old woman, from Watford, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

She has been taken to a police station in Merseyside to be interviewed.
