A man has been arrested following the death of a four-year-old girl struck by a suspected stolen car when it mounted a pavement.

Violet Grace Youens died after being struck on Prescot Road, St Helens, Merseyside, on Friday.

Aidan McAteer, 23, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

His mother urged him to contact police after seeing his photo online.

Police believe he had left the country and his mother appealed for him to get in touch after recognising his picture.

He is in custody on Merseyside and is due to be questioned by detectives later.
