A man has been hurt following a serious collision which closed the M62 in both directions.

A car and two HGVs crashed on the westbound carriageway between junction 7 (A57) and junction 8 (A574) at about 19:46 GMT on Wednesday.

Cheshire Police said a pedestrian was then hit by several vehicles.

The 20-year-old man from Warrington was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The road was shut for several hours but has since reopened.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area, and football fans at Liverpool's home match against Leicester were warned to expect delays.

Cars trapped on the motorway following the crash were released by 00:10, Highways England said.

The eastbound carriageway reopened at 01:10 and the westbound side was open by 02:30, a spokesperson added.
