A six-year-old girl has died after getting into difficulties in a hotel swimming pool in the Canary Islands.

Megan Thrower, from King's Lynn, Norfolk, was on holiday with her parents and older brother when she was pulled out of the pool.

She was pronounced dead at the scene on Sunday.

The family was believed to be on the second day of a holiday at the Gran Canaria Princess Hotel, Playa del Ingles, in Gran Canaria.

A spokesman for the holiday company said: "Thomson regrets to confirm that one of its customers died on Sunday following a tragic accident while on holiday in Gran Canaria.

"We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased at what must be a truly difficult time.

"Our resort staff continue to offer every support and assistance to the family involved."

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are aware of the death of a British national in Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria and are offering consular assistance to the family."
