Norfolk university to build £2.8m gymnast centre

Work is due to start this month on a £2.8m Olympic gymnastics centre at the University of East Anglia.

The centre will have pits for vaulting, a high bar, tumble track, floor area and floor level trampoline.

There will be viewing areas and the option to bring in additional spectator seating for competitions.

Keith Nicholls, director of Sportspark, developing the centre, said: "There are hundreds of children in the area waiting to get into a gymnastics club."

The centre will cater especially for those who wish to take up gymnastics at an introductory level.

"A director of gymnastics will be appointed whose role it will be to develop a programme of foundation level gymnastics," Mr Nicholls said.

"We will provide a platform to encourage and support those with a passion and skill for gymnastics to go on and compete with established performance level clubs.

"There will also be opportunities for clubs from across the county to hire out the facilities for competitions and training purposes."
