Police are trying to trace the owner to two Staffordshire bull terriers which attacked a 74-year-old man.
It happened as the victim was walking his own dog in Brunswick Walk, Northampton, in the morning.
The dogs, a male and a female with brindle markings, attacked the man's pet and as he bent down to pick it up, he lost his balance and was attacked.
He has been taken to Northampton General Hospital. The Staffordshire bull terriers are in kennels.
The victim's dog has been taken for veterinary surgery.
Officers appealed for anyone with information about the dogs or the owner to contact them.
