Marina building at Northampton gets planners' go-ahead

Planning permission has been granted for a new building on an island in a £2m marina development in Northampton.

West Northamptonshire Development Corporation has given the go ahead for the development at Becket's Park.

Construction is expected to start in October and is the final stage in the marina development.

Offices, showers and laundry facilities for boaters will be housed in a building with a glass security frontage to provide panoramic views of the site.

West Northamptonshire Development Corporation chief executive Peter Mawson said: "The building uses eco-friendly materials.

"It will be an important part of the marina development, which will be at the heart of a renaissance for Northampton's waterfront".

Boating community hub

The former disused boating lake in Becket's Park has been drained, excavated and refilled.

Contractors are now installing 100 floating pontoons for mooring boats.

Irven Forbes, from the Environment Agency, said: "We have already had more than 30 people interested in mooring in the marina from March 2011.

"The new facilities building is an integral part of the development and will help to make the marina a real hub of the boating community."

The marina will offer 80 moorings, six of which will be for residential use.

The remaining berths will be available for short term visitors and pleasure craft.
