Man, 83, dies after car hits lamppost in Northampton

An 83-year-old man died in hospital after the car he was driving struck a lamppost in Northamptonshire.

The accident happened in Park Avenue South near the junction with Christchurch Road, Northampton, just before 2000 GMT on Thursday.

Police said the car left the road for "reasons unknown" before mounting a footpath and hitting the lamppost.

The driver was treated at the scene before being taken to Northampton General Hospital where he later died.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
