Northampton council discusses store expansion

Plans to extend the floor space of a superstore in Northampton by 70% are to be discussed by councillors.

Sainsbury's has applied to the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation to expand its Weedon Road store by 2,489 sq m (26,791 sq ft).

Northampton Borough Council's planning committee is being consulted about it.

A report to the committee, which meets on 11 January, notes concerns the expansion may have a damaging effect on the town centre.

The report recommends that councillors object to the plans unless the development corporation are "fully satisfied" trade will not be badly hit.

It says the corporation should "emphasise to Sainsbury's the importance of their presence in the Grosvenor Centre in Northampton town centre and seek methods to maintain their presence in the town".
