Northampton hospital bans child visits over flu fears

Children have been banned from visiting adult wards at Northampton General Hospital over fears they are more vulnerable to the flu virus.

Normal visiting times remain but a restriction of one visitor per patient is also in place, the hospital said.

Director of nursing Sue Hardy said a surge in flu normally follows the return to work and school in January.

"To help prevent flu spreading, we are being particularly careful about who is allowed to visit," she added.

"People intending to visit friends and relatives in hospital are urged to stay away if they have flu-like symptoms or are otherwise unwell.

"We have asked our staff to be especially vigilant with regard to visitors who may be displaying symptoms, and people will be asked to leave if there is thought to be any concern for the welfare of others."
