Ex-policeman given three-year order for sex attacks

A retired Northamptonshire police officer has been given a three-year community order after admitting sex attacks on a teenage girl 20 years ago.

Nicholas Whitehead, 52, of Brixworth, was sentenced at Northampton Crown Court. He pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent assault and one of fraud.

The court also ordered his name to be placed on the sex offenders' register.

His victim, who cannot be named, tried to report the crimes at the time but the force dealt with them internally.

The girl said she felt let down by Northamptonshire Police who said in a statement they took all complaints extremely seriously.

They referred a number of complaints to the Independent Police Complaints Commission regarding the case and the actions taken by officers 20 years ago.

The force said it understood that the Independent Police Complaints Commission has now decided no further action is to be taken.
