A Northamptonshire girl who won a European drag racing championship is going to race in Tennessee.

Paige Wheeler, 12, from Wellingborough, has been invited to the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) event this July.

Paige will be part of the R2B2 team at the event which allows junior drag racers the chance to show off their skills.

Paige said: "I'm really excited, I keep pinching myself to make sure it's real."

Paige was initially invited to race in the states last year by R2B2 pro racer Melanie Troxel, after Ms Troxel spotted her racing at the Santa Pod Raceway in Wellingborough.

Paige become the European champion in the junior category of drag racing at the event last September.

It led to the 12-year-old competing in a national drag racing event in Las Vegas.

Paige said: "Melanie has been my idol since I first discovered drag racing and to think that I'm now teammates with her is amazing."

Paige's father Andy Wheeler is excited at his daughter's new opportunity.

"I am so proud of Paige. It's a great opportunity for a British girl to be asked to take part in a drag race in America and I know she's going to be great," said Mr Wheeler.
