New £85m college building in Northampton opens

A new £85m campus has opened for Northampton College.

Staff and students have moved into the first phase of the college's new building at Booth Lane.

The new 22,000 sq m (236,806 sq ft) structure on the corner of St Gregory's Road and Booth Lane includes professional dance and theatre spaces, engineering workshops and IT suites.

The final phase of building work at Booth Lane will be completed in July 2012 with full access from late 2012.

Principal Len Closs said: "We have been working towards this exciting moment since we first sought the go ahead, back in 2006, for what was to become one of the country's most innovative and ambitious FE college improvement ventures."

The new building has energy-saving features like a wind turbine and photo-voltaic solar panels.

It uses recycled rainwater to flush toilets and has a green sedum roof.
