Approval for Higham Ferrers shop plan

An empty building on a Northamptonshire high street has been approved for use as a shop.

The decision was made after interest from a developer to turn the former car showroom in Higham Ferrers into a shop selling recycled household goods.

More than 300 people opposed any decision that would allow a recycling shop on the High Street.

East Northamptonshire councillors said the activity carried out by the owners was irrelevant at this stage.

Ellis Recycling Solutions, which runs a recycling business in Rushden town centre, had expressed an interest in opening a shop on the site and this had provoked the public reaction.

Campaigner Dorothy Maxwell said: "It isn't what people want - it would cause chaos for local businesses.

"There's not enough parking for that kind of shop."
