Northamptonshire 'Supergran' Ann Timpson honoured for bravery

A Northamptonshire woman who prevented a jewellery raid has been awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery.

Ann Timson, 71, hit the gang of six with her handbag and forced them to give up their raid on Michael Jones Jewellers in Northampton.

The men, all from north London, were jailed at Northampton Crown Court in May 2011.

After the failed raid she said: "I just kept swinging my bag, then they tried to escape.

"I landed several blows against one lad."

Mrs Timson's brave exploits saw her hailed as a "handbag heroine" and it has earned her international publicity.

Northamptonshire Police have advised people not to risk their safety in emergency situations but instead call 999.
