Skate park in Desborough could close due to land sale

A newly refurbished skate park could be forced to close if a council decides to sell the land it is built on.

Kettering Borough Council is to consider selling land at the Hawthorns in Desborough, which is occupied by a skate park and former leisure centre.

Campaigners against the plans have described them as "madness".

Kettering councillor Alison Wiley said if the sale went ahead the skate park would be offered help to move to a different site.

'Absolute shock'

She added: "We want Desborough Youth Action Group to continue to have this facility elsewhere in the town of Desborough.

"We are very well aware that it is popular and we are aware of all of the issues."

Belinda Humfrey, who chairs Desborough Youth Action Group which runs the park, said: "I'm in absolute shock.

"Kettering Borough Council asked us to close the park and repair it, which the local community did."

The plans will be discussed at a meeting later and officially considered later this year.
