Under-occupancy charge: More than 200 tenants want to downsize

More than 200 council tenants in Northampton have applied to transfer to smaller homes because of the charge on under-occupied rooms.

The borough council said it was dealing with 233 households on the register who had applied for a transfer.

Many residents have asked the council to rehome them in smaller properties instead of facing housing benefit cuts.

A spokesperson said people who wanted to downsize must still pay the charge even if suitable properties were unavailable.
