Police have begun a murder inquiry after a man was found dead in a churchyard in Northampton.

Police said Jamie McMahon, 26, of Abbey Road, was found outside St Giles Church at about 07:45 BST on Wednesday after a call from a member of the public.

Police said Mr McMahon could have been a victim of robbery, but the cause of his death is currently unclear.

He was last seen alive earlier in the morning while out in clubs in the town centre.

Det Ch Insp Tom Davies, who is leading the investigation, said: "Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Jamie.

"We know that Jamie was in the town centre on the night he died and visited some of the local clubs.

"He was last seen alive in the area of York Road around 02:00 BST on Wednesday and was wearing a dark-coloured hoodie, jeans and trainers.

"The motive for the attack on Jamie is unclear, but there is a possibility that the motive may have been robbery.

"We want to speak with anyone who was with Jamie, or saw him in the hours before his death."
