The police watchdog is investigating the arrest of a man in Northampton who fell ill in custody and is in a serious condition in hospital.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is appealing for witnesses who were at Booze 'n' Stuff, in St Leonard's Road on 25 September.

Police arrested a 53-year-old man at about 10.45 BST and he fell ill in the early hours of the following day.

He is now in a critical but stable condition at an Oxford hospital.

Police attended two incidents at the Booze 'n' Stuff shop on 25 September involving the man, who is from Northampton.

IPCC investigators wish to speak to anyone who was near the shop between 17:15 and 18:40 BST and between 22:15 and 22:45 BST.

Northamptonshire Police referred itself to the IPCC on 26 September and said it would be inappropriate to comment further while the watchdog investigates.
