A new all-weather athletics track is to be built in Northamptonshire after planning permission was granted.

The track at Moulton College will be shared with Rugby and Northampton Athletics Club.

The club has had no Northampton base for a year, after having to leave its Sixfields stadium site as part of Northampton Town FC's redevelopment.

Daventry District Council has given the green light to the plans. It is hoped the track will be completed next year.

Moulton College has invested £18m in sporting facilities and Stephen Davies, the principal, said the new athletics facilities would provide outstanding opportunities for students, professional athletes and teams.

Steve Osborne, chair of the council's planning committee, said the decision to approve the plans was unanimous.

"It's good for Northamptonshire, for Daventry district and it's good for athletics," he said.
