Man dies after being hit by fire engine on call in Northampton

A man has died after being hit by a fire engine on its way to an emergency.

The 51-year-old was struck on Towcester Road, Northampton, by a vehicle responding to a call at about 19:20 GMT on Wednesday, police said.

The pedestrian was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Coventry but died later.

Northamptonshire Police closed the road for several hours but it was reopened on Thursday. Witnesses to the crash are urged to come forward.

In a statement, Darren Dovey, chief fire officer of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We are working with Northamptonshire Police and have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances of the collision."
