Warning over thefts from vehicles in Nottinghamshire

A sharp rise in the number of thefts from cars in Nottinghamshire has prompted a warning from police.

In the past six weeks, 51 incidents have been reported in the West Bridgford, Lady Bay and Ruddington areas, compared to just 18 in May.

Police said the summer surge partly coincided with events such as international cricket at Trent Bridge and the Riverside Festival.

Owners have been urged to secure vehicles and keep valuables hidden.

Crime reduction manager Peter Ainley said: "When there is a sporting event, they do attract the criminals in, because of the number of vehicles that are here.

"They present an obvious target and we have noticed a rise in crime, so we are continually giving out the message 'Check you are locked, put things away'."

He added that a capture car - a vehicle fitted with cameras to film any thefts - was being used in the area.
