A 24-year-old man was shot dead in a back garden in Nottingham in what police believe was a targeted attack.

Police were called to the property on Heatherington Gardens, Top Valley, at about 0050 BST on Saturday following reports that a man had been shot.

The man, who has not yet been formally identified, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Detectives said the shooting was not a random attack and the victim is thought to have had a connection to the gunman.

The area has been cordoned off and a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out later.

Nottinghamshire Police said: "Local officers are carrying out high visibility patrols in the area and the address remains cordoned off while inquiries continue. A detailed forensic examination of the scene is ongoing.

"A dedicated incident room has been set up at Radford Road police station and a team of detectives are following up a number of lines of inquiry."

Police have appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them.
