A ceremony has been held to present the Mercian Regiment with the freedom of a borough in Nottinghamshire.
The Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Gedling was awarded to the 2nd Battalion Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters) on Wednesday.
The Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Pat Blandamer, presented the regiment with a special scroll in recognition of the soldiers' commitment to the country.
The regiment is expected to parade through Arnold in either 2011 or 2012.
They are to tour Afghanistan shortly so have put parade plans on hold.
Mrs Blandamer said: "It is very important to me that Gedling Borough Council honours the Mercian Regiment.
"It is a fitting tribute and the very least we can do to recognise the incredible work that they are doing on behalf of the whole country."
The regiment was formed in 2007 when the Cheshire Regiment merged with the Staffordshire Regiment and the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters.
