An Olympic-sized swimming pool will be built in Nottingham as part of a major revamp of one of its biggest leisure centres.

The £13.5m redevelopment of the Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre will include the first 50m pool in the city.

The leisure centre will close for refurbishment later this year and will reopen in 2015.

The city council plans to close the nearby Beechdale Swimming Centre after the new facility is finished.

The revamped Harvey Haddon centre will also include a fitness suite, a health suite and spaces for classes, dance and other fitness activities.

A city council spokesman said the development would "complement the outdoor athletic stadium and football pitches and contribute to the on-going regeneration of the area".

The nearest Olympic-sized pools to Nottingham are at Sheffield and at Loughborough University.

The council said it would work with swimming clubs and schools to help them find alternative locations until the site reopens.
