Nottingham food bank opened for school holidays

A new food bank aimed at helping families during the school summer holidays has opened in Nottingham.

The NG7 food bank was set up by volunteers following reports people were walking from the city centre to another food bank in Beeston.

The new service gives families with limited incomes access to food and groceries after they have been referred there by other organisations.

Organisers said it would remain open until the end of the school holidays.

Jo Thorpe, from the food bank, said: "We heard stories people were walking from Nottingham city centre to the Hope food bank in Beeston and then walking back with two full carrier bags.

"If you've got three or four children and they're getting free school meals then throughout the six-week holidays you're having to find many extra meals each week.

"You hear stories about parents going without food so their children can eat."
