Nottingham parking rethink prompts consultation

A consultation on a third round of parking charge changes in Nottingham has begun.

The city council introduced evening charges last November but faced criticism from businesses who claimed it would put off visitors.

The charges were revised in February but are now set to change again with maximum stay restrictions removed.

Officials admitted they had made mistakes and said they hoped the new system would be in place by November.

'Legal obligation'

In 2011, the city council set charges for on-street evening and Sunday parking at up to 70p per half an hour.

In February this was changed to a £1 flat fee but many places still had a maximum one-hour limit.

Now the council has said it wants to remove time restrictions but with some charges between 18:00 and 20:00.

The council said it was legally obliged to carry out the consultation but changes showed they were listening to local firms.
