Thames Valley Police unveils new road death unit

Thames Valley Police has launched a 25-strong centralised unit dedicated to investigating fatal road crashes.

The road death investigation unit is based at Bicester in Oxfordshire, Three Mile Cross in Berkshire and Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire.

Previously, investigations were carried out within local road policing units.

In the year to September there were 69 road deaths in the Thames Valley area. Last year, 173 people died.

Unit officer Sgt Pete Jell said: "People who cause serious accidents through dangerous or reckless driving, poor decision making, or through driving with drugs or alcohol in their system need to be brought to justice.

"As a unit, we aim to do this."
