Famous names from the world of politics, show business and sport have donated miniature works of art to a charity sale at an Oxford school.

Joanna Lumley, co-star of the cult BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, is among those who have created pieces for the event at New College School.

Pupils and staff have also contributed to the sale of more than 200 postcards which will take place on 19 October.

A public preview ahead of the auction will be held at the school later.

Harriet Cawood, head of the mathematics department and co-ordinator of the sale, is the only person who knows which artist created each postcard.

The artist who has created the work will only be identified once the piece has been sold.

She said: "I've been asked some very sneaky questions by the boys and my colleagues in the staff room, who are all keen to purchase a famous name.

"But I am being extremely careful not to give away any clues."

All the money raised will go to Cancer Research UK and the Princess Royal Trust for Carers.
