Banbury towpath death 'not suspicious'

The death of a woman whose body was found on a canal towpath in Oxfordshire is not being treated as suspicious, police have said.

The body of the 82-year-old was found on a canal bridge in Southam Road, Banbury, at about 0930 GMT on Sunday.

A post-mortem examination was completed earlier but the cause of death has not yet been discovered.

Police said the cold weather may have contributed to the woman's death but further tests would be carried out.

Det Ch Insp Colin Paine said: "The post-mortem examination results confirm that there was no third party involvement in the woman's death so we are not treating it as suspicious.

"Further tests will now be carried out to try and determine the exact cause of the woman's death, but it is likely she suffered from exposure to the cold weather after spending the night outside."

The woman's relatives, who live abroad, have been informed of her death.
