An estate in Oxfordshire is celebrating the success of a planning application for a new sports pavilion that has been proposed for nearly a decade.

The new building, which is designed to be moveable, will replace the current structure at Barton Recreation Ground.

Oxford City Council's representative for Sport and Play, Mark Lygo, said the new facility was for "sports as well as community use".

The council said the £350,000 pavilion should open in late summer.

Sue Holden, the secretary of Barton Community Association, said she was delighted by the new pavilion.

'Long overdue'

She said: "It will have a bar facility. There will be a social element.

"It will also be available for hire. We want to make sure it reaches its full potential for use."

The pavilion is on the edge of Barton Estate, which has more than 4,000 residents.

The existing pavilion suffers from a number of problems, including the presence of asbestos.

Ms Holden described the current pavilion: "It's dreadful. It's absolutely awful. It hasn''t been fit for purpose for a considerable time."

Mr Lygo said: "The community have waited a long time for this to happen and I am delighted that we have been able to approve the planning permission.

"This is the first step in rebuilding the pavilion for the community to use."
