Oxford's Iffley Road has major repair work

A £2.5m scheme to repair the surface of Iffley Road in Oxford has begun.

The work is scheduled to last until Autumn 2012 with a four-week break over the Christmas period.

Rodney Rose of Oxfordshire County Council said: "This road surface is reaching the end of its life and needs fixing as soon as possible."

The first phase resurfaces The Plain to Henley Street with the second covering the remaining area up to Donnington Bridge Road.

Additional proposals for the project include zebra crossings near Stockmore Street and Percy Street.

Mr Rose added: "I think anybody who uses the route on a regular basis would agree this is a job that needs doing."
