Witney free parking backed by West Oxfordshire council

Free parking should continue in an Oxfordshire town, council officers have recommended.

In a report, West Oxfordshire District Council said Witney's current free car parking scheme had contributed to its "economic success" in recent years.

The recommendations also include increasing long stay parking from five hours to nine hours, and extending the number of short stay spaces available.

The proposals will be considered at a full cabinet meeting on 14 November.

'Capacity issues'

The number of long stay spaces at The Woolgate Centre car park would be cut in favour of more short stay spaces.

Long stay car parking at Marriotts Walk Shopping Centre would be increased from five hours to nine hours.

The council said this strategy would "ease car parking capacity issues".

It added this was a short term fix and said a longer term strategy was needed to meet future demand, which would likely involve creating additional car parking spaces.

No changes have been proposed for the Woodford Way car park.

If adopted, the strategy would be a pilot scheme with additional consultation carried out over a 12-month period.
