Residents have been evacuated from one of Oxford's tower blocks after a fire broke out on the fifth floor.

About 40 firefighters battled the blaze inside the Hockmore building at about 10:30 GMT.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue crews entered the flat with breathing apparatus and were able to put the fire out. Seven fire engines and three specialist vehicles were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and an investigation is under way.

Crews remained on the scene for several hours to inspect the site.

Hockmore is one of five tower blocks built in the city in the 1960s.

In November Oxford City Council gave the go ahead for a £18m project to refurbish the ageing buildings.
