Oxford's Northway and Marston flood alleviation scheme approved
The first part of a £2.2m scheme to reduce flooding in Oxford has been approved.
Oxford City Council's East Area Planning Committee gave the go-ahead for the project in the Northway and Marston wards in East Oxford at a meeting earlier.
The plan involves creating a "flood storage area" around Northway Community Field.
The area was affected by flash flooding in 2005, 2007 and 2012.
The authority said the project could reduce the flood risk to 110 properties. The flooding occurs when the nearby Peasmoor Brook and the Headington Hill Tributary overflow.
Further flood alleviation work will take place at Westland Drive, Saxon Way and Oxford Boxing Academy.
A planning application for the second part of the scheme, focussed on Court Place Farm Recreation Ground and Peasmoor Piece, will be decided on 7 September.
The council, which received funding from the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership Local Growth Fund and the Environmental Agency, intends for the work to be completed by next summer.
