Archaeologists probe 'market hall' find in Newport

Archaeologists are working at a Shropshire site after what is believed to be an "exciting" historical find.

Contractors working on Newport's regeneration are believed to have found the foundations of the original market hall building.

Telford and Wrekin Council said the discovery near the Butter Cross was being examined in detail and recorded.

The foundations will then be covered up as improvements to the town centre continue.

The original market at Butter Cross was demolished in 1860 and replaced by the present market hall.

The council said the find would not be lost as the designs for the Butter Cross pavings would be changed to show where it was positioned.
