Firefighters remain at the scene of a fire at a composting site in Shropshire almost a week after it started.

About 100 tonnes of compost caught fire at Vital Earth Ltd, Sutton-Upon-Tern, near Market Drayton. It was the second fire at the site during last week.

The compost is still smouldering and the barn it was stored in is now structurally unsafe.

The Environment Agency said pollution from the fire has killed around 100 small fish in a nearby pool.

Water is being pumped out of the nearby River Tern to help larger fish survive while a lagoon has been set up to try to capture the polluted fire water, the spokesman added.

Until the composting is operational, food waste is being taken to Derbyshire.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
