Driver dies 'after becoming ill' in Wem

A man has died after apparently being taken ill while driving in Shropshire.

Emergency services were called to a road near Newtown Primary School, Wem, during Thursday afternoon after a car left the road and hit a garden fence.

Sgt Ian Brogan, of West Mercia Police, said the car driver had been pronounced dead at the scene.

He said police were investigating the possibility that the driver, thought to be in his 60s, had been taken ill at the wheel.

The unclassified road was closed for most of the afternoon and evening as investigators worked at the scene.
