Man dies after being found hanging at Stoke Heath YOI

An 18-year-old prisoner has died in hospital after he was found hanging in his cell, the Prison Service said.

Michael Cartwright was found hanging in his cell at Stoke Heath Young Offenders Institution in Market Drayton, Shropshire, at 2050 GMT on Monday.

He was serving 20 months for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and theft.

The prisoner was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead at about 1235 GMT on Wednesday.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "As with all deaths in custody, there will be an investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."
