An 89-year-old man who was a councillor for 55 years has been made an honorary freeman of Telford and Wrekin.

George Whyle, from Donnington, served on Wellington Rural District Council, Shropshire County Council, Wrekin District Council and Lilleshall Parish Council between 1947 and 2002.

Mr Whyle becomes the sixth freeman since Telford & Wrekin Council became a unitary authority in 1998.

He said he was "very proud to be made an honorary freeman".

The council's annual meeting recognised Mr Whyle as a "person of distinction who is considered to have rendered eminent service to the borough".
