A man has been found dead in Shropshire, on the A458 Shrewsbury to Bridgnorth road.
An ambulance crew was called out at about 04:30 GMT after reports of a man lying in the road near the Riverside Inn, in Cound, between the villages of Cressage and Cross Houses.
It is thought that the man was hit by a car and West Mercia Police have urged witnesses to come forward.
The road was closed for several hours during the police investigation.
Pc Mike Pearce said: "We are keeping an open mind but the indications at this time would suggest this man may have been in collision with a vehicle which did not stop at the scene.
"This has happened on an unlit country road around half a mile from Cross Houses and we are considering the possibility that the driver did not realise what had happened."
Police are particularly keen to trace the occupants of a white van that drove past at about 04:20 GMT. It is believed that they were wearing fluorescent yellow jackets.
