A TV appeal for information about a Shrewsbury man wanted in connection with drugs offences has brought a "promising" response, police said.

CCTV footage, together with a passport photo of 53-year-old Robert Gamble, was shown on BBC's Crimewatch on Tuesday.

Mr Gamble went missing from the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in January 2011, after having an operation to remove a package of cocaine from his body.

Police said the drugs had a street value of more than £8,000.

He has not been seen since, but is thought possibly to be in the Brighton or Croydon areas where he is known to have links.

"There was a promising response to last night's appeal," said Det Con Alex Sullivan, the investigating officer at West Mercia Police.

"We received five calls with significant information which is being followed up."
