Man arrested after Telford car fires

A man has been arrested after a series of suspected arson attacks on cars in Telford.

Officers were called to Leegate Avenue, Telford, at 20:25 BST on Wednesday, by Shropshire Fire and Rescue, after reports of a car on fire.

A man in his 20s was later arrested in connection with the attack.

West Mercia Police said they were linking the incident to attacks on several cars in the area on Wednesday morning.

Fire crews had been called to six incidents on Halifax Drive, Cheltenham Court, Chepstow Drive and Aintree Close between 00.05 and 03:00 BST. Nobody is thought to have been injured in the fires.

Acting Ch Insp Richard Langton said inquiries by a fire investigation team, forensic officers and CCTV operators resulted in the identification of a group of youths who had been acting suspiciously in the area.

"A man in his 20s was subsequently arrested in connection with last night's incident and is currently in custody," he said.

He added that the investigation was continuing and appealed for anyone with information on the attacks to come forward.
