Second man arrested after Telford car fires

A second man has been arrested in connection with a series of suspected arson attacks on cars in Shropshire.

Fire crews were called to deal with five fires in Leegomery, Telford, at about 00:05 BST, having already dealt with seven incidents on Wednesday.

Police said an 18-year-old was in custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson.

A 20-year-old man arrested on Thursday has been released. The latest fires were on Acacia Drive.

Police said the fires were dealt with before they managed to take hold this time.

Acting Ch Insp Richard Langton, from West Mercia Police, said the force was stepping up its investigation.

He said: "We are working with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of these fires and at this stage it does appear they were started deliberately.

"The investigation into these incidents in Leegomery has now been stepped up and officers from a number of departments - including CID, Specialist Operations and Intelligence - are working together to track down the individuals responsible.

"Further patrols will be providing a visible presence on the streets of Leegomery day and night and I would warn the people starting these fires that it is only a matter of time before we identify you.

"Once identified, these individuals responsible will be dealt with very robustly."
