London 2012: Shropshire free swimming offered in run-up to Games

Free swimming sessions will be offered in the run-up to the Olympics at six venues run by Shropshire Council.

People will be able to swim for free during public sessions on one day each week from 1 May until 26 June.

The authority, which plans to make savings of £86m by 2014, said the scheme was a way of "giving something back to the public".

There would be no additional cost to the council as the venues were already open and staffed, it added.

The offer will apply at Oswestry Leisure Centre, Whitchurch Swimming Centre, Market Drayton Swimming Centre, The Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre and Much Wenlock Leisure Centre during public sessions on Tuesdays.

It will also be available on Wednesdays at Bridgnorth Leisure Centre.

The Olympic torch relay will pass through Shropshire in May as part of a 70-day UK tour.
