Malinslee centre officially opens after regeneration

A new local centre is due to be officially opened on a Telford estate later, more than two years after it was destroyed in an arson attack.

New shops have been built in Malinslee, alongside leisure facilities and a play area.

A free fun day has been arranged by Telford and Wrekin Council, with activities taking place from 13:00 BST.

Councillor Shaun Davies said the project had restored "the heart" of the estate.

"There was a feeling that Malinslee centre was derelict, downtrodden and wasn't a pleasant place to be," he said.

Nobody was injured in the fire in May 2010, although local shops were "almost completely gutted", police said at the time.

Regeneration of the area started in November and Mr Davies said the new facilities were already well-used by the local community.
