Newport supermarket 'to create 250 jobs'

Up to 250 new jobs could be created at a new supermarket in Newport, Shropshire, according to Morrisons.

The company has submitted plans for a store on Audley Avenue, which could open next year.

The site already has outline planning permission following a public inquiry in May, although Telford and Wrekin Council is challenging the decision.

Mark Thompson from Morrisons said its store would bring choice and jobs to Newport.

A two-week public inquiry has also opened into a proposal to build a Sainsbury's store in Station Road on land owned by the council.

Campaigners say development plans by Sainsbury and Morrisons were not proportionate to the size of the town and its 12,000 residents.

Development executive Mr Thompson said: "The site is deliverable, has consent in place and we are now working hard to progress the final design with a view to opening during the first half of 2014."
